    PROJECT: ANIMATION // CLIENT: ONE

Every now and then a job comes along that you just can't turn down...

"agit8" was a live event held at the Tate Modern on the Southbank from the 11th June - 13th June, just ahead of the G8 summit, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of activists to 'get on their soapboxes' and pressurize the G8 to take action to help eradicate extreme poverty by 2030.

We spent six weeks working directly with Richard Curtis and ONE to conceive and create 30 minutes of original content, which was projected on to the facade of the Tate Modern. The final product is part art installation, part documentary film and it involved working with a range of techniques and mixed media - incorporating music, speech, video, animation and motion graphics.

Once we had the rough concept sketched out, the team went about enlisting some of the biggest names in music today, as well as actors such as Colin Firth and Chiwetel Ejiofor, to contribute protest songs and speeches that were then woven into the film. We also commissioned a number of artists, illustrators and animators to create individual pieces of work to bring particular aspects of the story to life. The finished film takes a kaleidoscopic tour through some of the biggest protest movements of the last 100 years – from Civil Rights, Apartheid and Occupy, right the way up to the most pressing issue of our times : Extreme Poverty.

PROJECT: ANIMATION // CLIENT: STUDIO OUTPUT

"Attraction" is the world's largest musical and the first ever in the Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing.

Commissioned by Nestyle Corporation, the company behind the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony, the project is a key part of China’s Olympic legacy and will play daily to an audience of 10,000, for three years from September 2012.

We worked with Studio Output to provide creative direction and technical expertise across a huge visual area more than 20,000m² in size, using over 10,000m² of LEDs as well as live projection mapping on to the stage floor and water screens. Our team created supporting animation and visual effects to complement the musical stage show and set design.

Each performance involves 600 cast and crew, as well as a 200-strong production team, all housed in a custom-built village. The show is directed by the award winning Chinese film director Lu Chuan, whose previous two films, 'Kekexili' and 'Nanjing Nanjing', both grossed more than £50 million in their opening weekends.

Working on such a grand scale, with no restriction on production quality, for such a large audience, was a real thrill. Footage from the show as well as a 'making of' film will be available shortly.
  • Ron Arad's Curtain Call
    PROJECT: PHOTOGRAPHY // INSTALLATION

As part of Bloomberg Summer at the Roundhouse, internationally renowned artist, architect and designer, Ron Arad, invited his favourite artists, musicians and friends to create unique work for his 360° interactive installation. FND, MSA Visuals and FLAT-E teamed up once again to host a night. We showcased a diverse range of recent projects including a selection of Barneys panoramic portraits from Hanoi.
  • Saatchi & Saatchi
    PROJECT: LIVE/INTERACTIVE // CLIENT: SAATCHI & SAATCHI

The Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase is one of the highlights of the Cannes Lions Festival. Their senior creative team, Jonathan Santana & Xander Smith, came up with the initial concept. ‘Hello Future’ - a dark, retro-futuristic setting with a ‘HAL-like' host.

We teamed up with our good friends and longtime collaborators Memo Atken (MSA Visuals) and Robin McNicholas (Flat-e) to direct the visual performance. We also created graphics for the ‘HAL’ character, the titles, and various other ‘interludes’.

We worked closely with Aaron Meyers who developed the kinect performance software for Jamie Lidell's section, and the stage, lighting and sound designers to pull together the overall look and feel.

We had a very interesting process for the creation of the content which was created on what we call 'the HAL Rig'. It is a very analogue process utilising found objects such as a step ladder, a couple of broom sticks, rear projection perspex, large metal bowl, bin bags, gaffer tape and glass prisms. These were then filmed with a handheld pointgrey dragonfly2, sending this live feed into a laptop running modul8. We then played with a few midi sliders and knobs to deform and affect the images in realtime which we then project onto perspex and film.

It was truly an amazing collaboration between so many talented people and we were lucky that the client had full faith in us to allow us to go as crazy as we wanted.

Behind the scenes documentation, videos and images coming soon...

  • Sony IFA 2009
PROJECT: SONY 2009 IFA // CLIENT: FREESTATE

We were commissioned by Freestate to execute three films for Sony’s Annual Conference in Berlin. ‘Detail’, ‘Motion’ and ‘Passion’ explore three different aspects of the beautiful game. Due to copyright issues we were not allowed to grade, crop or distort the supplied footage, which presented a huge challenge when it came to executing the brief. ‘Detail’ required animating supplied stock photography, ‘Motion’ was an energetic edit to a sound-bed of african rhythms and ‘Passion’ required the delicate handling of hundreds of pieces of video.
